Green roof inspiration

How to make green roof from GreenRoof Asia on Vimeo.

Been trying to think of green roof ideas for MCH before I skype Jon again eventually, and thought this to be pretty nifty. Worthy to consider how to use planter boxers in a more elegant and smarter way hm.

Taken from the source of the video, GreenRoof Asia:

"There are generally three types of green walls: green façades, living walls and retaining living walls. Green façades are made up of vines and climbing plants that grow onto supporting structures. These structures are positioned in a way to encourage plants to grow a certain way, with the soil beds being at the base of the structure, or at elevated planters or on rooftops. Usually a green façade needs a few seasons before reaching maturity. They are often used to create privacy, shade or security.

Another type of green wall is a living wall. These are panels or modules or pre-planted blankets that are attached to a structure or frame. These types of green walls support a much wider variety of plant species than green façades. They thrive in many areas by being able to use a variety of plants, in sun, shade or inside.

The third type if the retaining living walls, which are used to stabilise slopes while also supporting vegetation and reducing storm water runoff. They protect slopes against erosion and are installed in modules, made of metal or concrete mats that interlock. They can provide structural retention on slopes of up to 80 degrees in gradient.

In terms of benefit, green walls have many similar benefits to green roofs. However, while they cannot be used as amenity spaces like green roofs, green walls can also be used for urban farming and are very visible on a building’s façade. In fact this is a core reason for their current popularity – they can be a unique and aesthetically pleasing part of a building’s design while also providing a wide range of benefits to the environment."

Their blog will be a good source of information on green roofs and walls in future, I think? Will have to check it out more often!
